RIDING SHOTGUN WITH ANAQUIN ADAMS: The Road To Retirement

ANAQUIN ADAMS
“Universal Superstar”

It’s a tough decision to make. Moving from the comfort of one profession to the unknown of another. To be honest, I’m not sure I’m making the right decision, but until I do it, I’ll never know. What I do know is that I can’t continue to do both sports at the same time. I need to be able to spend time preparing for fights and I can’t do that when I’m traveling the country doing wrestling matches.

Narrator: Anaquin Adams has been a professional wrestler for nearly six years. She has traveled the world fighting the best talent from all over. Tyke Index. Gabriel Ohio. Stacy DeVille. Alex Carjabel. RJ Mitchell. Itzumi Hayashi. She’s fought all types of matches from the norm to cage matches to deathmatches. Today, Anaquin Adams is going to make an announcement that will change the trajectory of her career. But things don’t always go as planned. Today, we are riding shotgun with Anaquin Adams on the road to professional wrestling retirement.

Narrator: Anaquin Alice Adams was born on January 1, 1990. Her parents were custodians at a local university who worked separate shifts and was only able to spend time together during weekends that consisted of plenty of time outdoors.

ANAQUIN ADAMS
“Universal Superstar”

“Hunting, Fishing. Camping. This was pretty much every weekend during the summer. Because my parents worked at the Washington State University, I was able to get in at the university’s nursing program once I completed high school. It was during some time at the hospital that I was introduced to professional wrestling in a rather unique way.”

Narrator: Her backstory, if you believe what she tells you, is that she was granted the gift of being wrestling’s “Universal Superstar” from another professional wrestling just before her passing.

ANAQUIN ADAMS
“Universal Superstar”

“I know it’s an odd story and believe me or not, that’s exactly what happened. Some people think it’s just my ‘gimmick’ but that’s not the case and I take that role very seriously so I went into training. Afterwards, I spent some time overseas before I made my return to the United States.  First HCW, where I met Robert Mack who was running around as Snakebite until he left to form Mile High Wrestling, now just MHW.

ROBERT MACK
“MHW Owner”

“What a lot of people don’t know? When I was building the ground work to open MHW, I was associating a lot with Anaquin Adams. I wanted to sign her and I wanted her to be the face of MHW. But because of her contractual obligations at the time, that didn’t work out. I was able to get her for a Special Attraction Match at our first Pay-Per View, and her match stole the whole show. Hands down, Match of 2018 for MHW.

From there, she became that; the superstar for superstars to have the Match of the Night with at our biggest events. The money she made us. The money she made herself. She’s a top notch superstar. Definately one of the greats. And I mean that.

Anaquin Adams means a lot to MHW. She never did sign a full time contract, but I believe that is what was best. Everything worked out how it was meant to. She’s a larger than life superstar persona, and I will forever be grateful for her contributions to MHW”

Narrator: She is heading to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to announce to the MHW and their fans that she is retiring from wrestling during an episode of MHW’s Throwdown. But things didn’t go as she planned.

MHW Throwdown Episode 26 (November 10, 2019)

Skrabz doesnt waste much time before he goes back in on Reaper. Slowly but surely, Skrabz gains more and more control throughout the match. Slowly wearing this beast of a man down, more than any of Reaper’s past opponents have.

But all the excitement on if Skrabz could be the first to pin Reaper ends when Tyke Index slides into the ring with a brick in his hand.
The fans boo very loudly as Tyke smashes the brick across the head of Skrabz, causing the referee to end the match.

Ray Hudson
Bullshit! This is absolute bullshit!

Tyke Index mounts Skrabz and starts slamming the brick into the face of Skrabz, as if he’s trying to murder the Ultimate Champion.

Wavy Crockett
Tyke Index is setting himself up for success at Black Magic. How is that bullshit?

Ray Hudson
We wanted to see this match, and Tyke Index just ruined it!

Reaper is seated in the corner, watching. Tyke finally tosses the brick out of the ring and looks to be about to take Skrabz to Coke Mountain.

Wavy Crockett
Finish him!

The crowd’s boos turn to cheers as a figure sprints down the ramp and slides into the ring.

Ray Hudson
That’s Anaquin Adams!

Wavy Crockett
She always lurking around when there’s an MHW PPV, tryna to get in on the action.

Tyke sees Anaquin as she gets to her feet and charges her for a clothesline, but she ducks spins around and clotheslines him over the top rope, sending him crashing out to the floor and then she turns around to find herself face to face with Reaper!

Ray Hudson
Oh boy….

Wavy Crockett
She’s dead where she stands. She should’ve stayed home this month.

Reaper stands over her as she walks up and goes face to face with him, even though he stands head and shoulders over her. She raises her arms out, daring him to take a shot when AMV gets in between them and coaxes Reaper from the ring as they exit the ring and check on Tyke.

Ray Hudson
AMV getting Reaper out of here.

Wavy Crockett
The Universal Superstar is lucky….

Anaquin checks on the condition of Skrabz to make sure he’s alright. She’s not dressed to wrestle, in fact, she’s in a “Black Magic” t-shirt, jeans and sneakers. She yells for a microphone and someone hands her one from ringside.

“Universal Superstar” Anaquin Adams
Considering that everyone got hauled off in cuffs, I guess your Reaper here and Tyke Index decided the champ was fair game.

Anaquin walks over to the side of the ring closest to the trio backing up the ramp.

“Universal Superstar” Anaquin Adams
I was here to speak to the MHW faithful to announce my retirement from professional wrestling because I’ve decided to go full time into MMA. This was supposed to be my retirement announcement after all the support they’ve given me as an outsider coming in to fight. And never once did they treat me as an outsider. They treated me as one of their own so I felt I owed them an explanation. Little did I expect that I’d have to come to the ring to run your asses off. So, now I wonder if perhaps a retirement announcement is enough? Perhaps I need a final match as well.

The crowd begins to chant Anaquin’s name. And then they begin to chant “Black Magic” causing a grin to spread across the face of Anaquin Adams.

“Universal Superstar” Anaquin Adams
I tweeted this week to an old friend of mine tell her I was hoping to meet up with her for another deathmatch, but you know what, lawyer? How about you put your Grape Ape looking monster there up against “The Universal Superstar” Anaquin Adams and we do this right. Anaquin Adams’ retirement match. A deathmatch. Anything goes. Last beast standing. If you’re not afraid of this outsider coming into your home and challenging your thug to a match, then let’s do this. That…

Anaquin points towards Reaper.

“Universal Superstar” Anaquin Adams
…versus me, Deathmatch at Black Magic. What say you?”
The crowd is all over the idea, and Tyke, despite not having a microphone, is yelling all kinds of creative noise toward the ring while staying very close to Reaper. Standing at the bottom of the ramp, the masked monster stares right at Anaquin, his head titling to one side, then the other, before AMV steps up and produces a microphone of his own.

Aloysius Marcus Vance IV
Look what we have here, folks! Another mouth that roars throwing out another challenge toward the New Nightmare! Did I call it or what?!
Boos rain down on Aloysius Marcus Vance IV, but he just keeps right on smiling as he takes a few steps forward ahead of his charge, looking right at Anaquin.

Aloysius Marcus Vance IV
I knew someone would step up before Black Magic, daring the Reaper to turn them from a warrior to a statistic, and here you are. Have you not been keeping up with the Internet, Adams? Do you not get notifications when your favorite dirt sheets spill the latest lockerroom scuttlebutt?

Just like that, the smile is gone. Reaper pounds one gloved fist into the opposite palm while Tyke just nods and grins smugly.

Aloysius Marcus Vance IV
This masked beast is not someone you fight. He is not someone you beat. He is someone you survive… and barely at that. I mean, look at the state of the champion right now. If you hadn’t butted in, he’d be lying there in a pool of blood and head wax, seeing triple of everything. But you did. And then you dropped a cherry on that little shit sundae by demanding a fight with my monster. The creature from whom you just snatched his dinner and then dared him openly to retaliate. How little sense-

Before AMV can finish his monologue, Reaper himself snatches the microphone. The crowd lets out an ‘ohhhh!’ while both Tyke and Aloysius look at Reaper, slack-jawed, as he holds dominance over the stick. Instead of speaking, though, he turns and chucks the microphone at the stage before re-locking on Anaquin. He points directly at her, then jerks a thumb toward himself… then drags that thumb across his throat!

ANAQUIN ADAMS
“Universal Superstar”

“Might have jumped in a little too soon, but if you see someone hitting another human being with a brick, sometimes you gotta do what’s right. There was no way that I was going to let Index and Reaper double team Skrabz, much less use a brick on the guy. I’ve got my work cut out for me at Black Magic. It’s my final wrestling match and I don’t want it to be a stinker, that’s for sure.”

Narrator: A deathmatch in wrestling is an anything goes match and can typically use weapons, barbed wire, light tubes and on occasion, explosions. Anaquin Adams isn’t new to deathmatch, having wrested in a number of them last year, the most high profile of them being at HCW’s Hardcore Kingdom when she went toe to toe with Deathmatch specialist Itzumi Hayashi.

ITZUMI HAYASHI
“Deathmatch Specialist”

My first personal encounter with Anaquin Adams was in Omega Academy’s annual Bloody Icon tournament. Every year, the majority of the field is made up of those of us who are known for our prowess in deathmatches. Myself. Rebel Manson. Masatake Kawamata, Jack Bronson, Lisa Seldon and so forth. People who follow ultraviolence know us. You know we are skilled in such a situation; you know what we can do. But in Bloody Icon there are also a few entrants who are less experienced in deathmatches, or even sometimes for whom this is their first. Naturally us veterans go just as hard on the neophytes as we do on each other. If they want to step into our world, we’ll give them that full welcome. Sometimes, they rise to the challenge, fight through the pain, and earn respect. Sometimes (pause, then sadistic laugh) they do not. Sadly Anaquin and I didn’t get to cross paths in Bloody Icon, but she certainly fell into the former category from what I saw. She was out of her element but she didn’t let that stop her from fighting. Imagine my pleasant surprise when not only did she give everything she had to Bloody Icon, she wanted to face me in a deathmatch outside of the tournament.

Narrator: That deathmatch would take place at HCW’s final PPV of 2018, Hardcore Kingdom.

ITZUMI HAYASHI
“Deathmatch Specialist”

There is little in wrestling that earns my respect and less still that impresses me. A newcomer to the world of ultraviolence jumping in headfirst and giving our discipline the respect it deserves? That is one thing I can reciprocate, and I can honestly say that Anaquin earned it. It’s a shame that will remain our only match, but it’s one she and I can both be proud of.

Narrator: However, this time it would be much different. Reaper hasn’t been defeated. He is portrayed as a monster. He towers over her, outweighs her and no one has seemed to have found a way to defeat him. However, unlike some of the others, Anaquin Adams has a bit of a monster side of her own.

ANAQUIN ADAMS
“Universal Superstar”

“Last year, I was beaten and humiliated, much to the extent that I wound up in a mental institution for several days. I was never quite the same after that. When I came back to wrestling, I was more bloodthirsty than ever. So much so that I was no longer considered the “Universal Superstar” but simply called Monster.”

Narrator: Monster, indeed. She donned face paint and a monster persona. She played mind games with her opponents. The one who beat and embarrassed her was quickly dispatched and then she fought inside a double caged match that she called “Prison Break” and lost her HCW Pure Championship to Gabriel Ohio taking a tremendous fall from the top of the cell.

ANAQUIN ADAMS
“Universal Superstar”

“I was out of commission for a month or so after that. My contract with HCW had expired and I decided to head to California and after taking some time for myself, I got rid of the monster and once again became the Universal Superstar. But I felt there was something missing in my life. Wrestling was a passion for me, absolutely, but there was this other thing eating away at me.”

Narrator: That thing was MMA.

ANAQUIN ADAMS
“Universal Superstar”

“I secretly negotiated a contract with Global Combat Championships, but I wanted some time to get into MMA shape, which is far different from professional wrestling shape. I joined a camp, just to get myself into that physical shape as well as mental shape. I stopped doing wrestling for nine months. I concentrate only on MMA. When I felt I was ready, then I let them book me in a fight.”

Narrator: That fight was against the Gaia Galanos.  She is now the Global Combat Championship Women’s Featherweight Champion.

GAIA GALANOS
“GCC Women’s Featherweight Champion”

If there is one thing no one in the Featherweight Division can dispute, it’s that Anaquin Adams is a tough woman. She stood in the middle of the octagon and banged with me for three straight rounds. The former Featherweight Champion couldn’t even go two rounds with me. Going three rounds in the octagon is not a joke. Preparing for an MMA fight takes a lot of willpower much like professional wrestling, but this is a completely different jungle with a different set of rules. I’m excited to know that Anaquin Adams has decided to make this jungle her home.

Narrator: But wrestling was still in her blood. When MHW returned from a hiatus, Anaquin Adams made an appearance against Alex Carbajal, otherwise referred to as Bullet. It would be Anaquin’s first win in the promotion who would bring her in for their PPV events to make a strong card even stronger.

Narrator: The match with Bullet took a toll on Anaquin, but she wanted to continue to wrestle and found herself back in California Wrestling, but then Global Combat Championship called her to ask if she wanted a match against Jessica House.

ANAQUIN ADAMS
“Universal Superstar”

“Jessica House was 2-1 at the time and, of course I wanted the fight. So I agreed and then began to train with a new camp. While I appreciated the first camp I was a part of, the House of Khan was on another level. The downside was the location, but I needed something fast in order to prepare myself for the fight.”

Narrator: And whatever it was she did, it paid off as she knocked out Jessica House in the first round of their fight.

ANAQUIN ADAMS
“Universal Superstar”

“I’m not going to lie. I was in shock. But it was also that moment that I knew that professional wrestling just wasn’t what I wanted anymore. I will always love the sport and those in it whom have befriended me, but MMA is what inspires me now. It’s what drives my every thought. But, I just didn’t want to quit like that, so I had a conversation with Robert Mack. MHW had a PPV coming up called Black Magic and I wanted to be a part of it. I wanted to have my last match where I have had the majority of my own historic moments.”

Narrator: Enter the Reaper.

ANAQUIN ADAMS
“Universal Superstar”

“I keep an eye on MHW when I’m not on the road. I knew of Reaper. He was beating everyone in sight. Of everyone in MHW who’s not the champion, Reaper was going to be the challenge. So, when Rob asked me who I wanted to face, I think I heard his jaw hit his desk when I told him it was Reaper.”

ROBERT MACK
“MHW Owner”

“Yeah, wanting to retire in the wrestling ring against Reaper? I was shocked. Taking nothing from Anaquin, but my first thought was, “Wouldn’t you want to face someone you might can beat?” This guy is a monster, ya know? But that’s what defines Anaquin Adams. A true warrior. A fearless warrior. Someone who doesn’t want the easy wins. She wants to earn everything she gets. She lives for the challenge. That’s why I respect her.”

ALOYSIUS MARCUS VANCE IV
“Manager of Reaper”

“Anaquin Adams? Just listen to the commentary for that match and you’ll get the general opinion. She shows up when there’s money to be made and a big-match contract to snatch up. And from all I’ve heard, she usually handles herself pretty well. But eventually, the spotty performances and laid-back schedule will catch up. She already had two strikes against her by getting between Reaper and his prey and then challenging him to a fight. But the third strike? The final nail in her coffin? Demanding a match in which there are no rules to keep Reaper from doing as he was born to do: destroy. Does she get respect for guts? Absolutely. Do we, in some small way, admire that she stepped up, sight unseen, to the biggest beast in the yard? For certain. Will that get in the way of Reaper putting her career in the ground at Black Magic? What the hell do YOU think?”

MHW Black Magic (November 24, 2019)

Highlights of the deathmatch between Anaquin Adams and Reaper are shown. Anaquin getting caught up in barbed wire ropes and then Reaper charging in and just barreling into her, snapping the wire and sending them both to the floor as the wire tangles in between then. Referees having to cut the two apart.

In the backstage area, Reaper tosses Anaquin over a production box and then takes the production box and drives it into the wall repeatedly, only to look up and see Anaquin above her as she flies off and takes him down.

The two fighting up to the second floor of the loading dock and fighting on the narrow passage, only to have Reaper throw Adams over the rail and she lands on a stack of pallets below. The giant Reaper steps over the railing and then just falls from the second floor, landing on Anaquin and driving them both through the pallets as dust billows up as the referee checks on them.

The referee is about to call for the stoppage, when the hand of Reaper reaches up from the rubble and he pulls himself to his feet and crawls out of the wooden tomb, as the referee declares him the winner of the match.

ALOYSIUS MARCUS VANCE IV
“Manager of Reaper”

“Has my opinion of Anaquin Adams changed? I’ll tell you this much: I don’t buy into the ‘Monster’ thing. Monsters hide under beds or in video games. The real monsters are living, breathing people. Where Anaquin is concerned, though… I can’t help but be impressed. That she would take Reaper that far, even put him in danger of losing? In a match where the chains are off? It’s a little unreal. It’s almost a shame that she’s done with wrestling, because not only would Reaper enjoy another go at her, I wouldn’t mind offering my managerial services for a while. A woman that dangerous is a license to print money. Hyperbole aside, Anaquin is the real deal. Anyone telling you otherwise probably got their ass kicked by her.”

BACKSTAGE AFTER BLACK MAGIC

Backstage Anaquin is removing her face paint while she’s being checked over. She has several lacerations, including on her forehead, but also all over her body.

Medic: Need you to hold still, Ms. Adams. Where else does it hurt?

Anaquin: Ribs. He landed right on me.

Medic: We’re going to have to get you looked at. Make sure there’s nothing internal that’s injured.

Anaquin: I feel like there’s something poking my side.

Medic: I’m going to lift up your shirt here for a moment.

The medic lifts up the side of her shirt and a large bruise is plainly evident.

Medic: You might have a broken rib, maybe more than one. Going to have to get you to the hospital.

LATER THAT NIGHT / HOSPITAL

Scene changes to Anaquin getting x-rayed and then later on in the hospital room. The doctor comes in and eyes the camera for a moment before turning back to Anaquin.

Doc: Three broken ribs. You’re a wrestler?

Anaquin: Fighter.

Doc: This happened in a fight?

Anaquin: Oh, wrestling match.

Doc: I thought you were a fighter?

Anaquin: (laughing, then winces) Ouch. I am. I mean, I had my final wrestling match tonight so I could go into fighting full time.

Doc: Well, you’re going to have to go home and rest for at least four weeks. If you don’t, they’ll never heal.

Anaquin: Rest for four weeks, got it.

Doc: Follow up with your primary care doctor before you go back to training.

Anaquin: Understood.

ANAQUIN ADAMS
“Universal Superstar”

“Well, I was hoping for a December fight, but that’s off. I had to let them know I could possibly do a January fight, so we shall see. Staying at home while the others are traveling and fighting all around the world is hard, but I’ll be back in the cage soon.”

Producer: Do you think you’ll miss wrestling?

ANAQUIN ADAMS
“Universal Superstar”

“(long pause).  Maybe. Yeah, I’ll probably miss it, but I’d miss MMA more and I just cannot do both. It’s one of those decisions you have to make as a professional and as an adult.

Producer: How you feel about your last match with Reaper.

ANAQUIN ADAMS
“Universal Superstar”

“We gave it all we had against one another. I didn’t win, but I’m very pleased with the match as a whole. We went out there to entertain the fans and that’s exactly what we did. There were multiple, what we call ‘holy shit’ chants, including the finish, so I feel you can’t do much better than that. There’s something about the MHW crowd that makes you want to just go that extra mile, I think I will miss that part.”

Producer: No regrets??

ANAQUIN ADAMS
“Universal Superstar”

“Regrets infer that you’ve made a mistake somewhere in your life. I’ve travelled the world, I’ve gotten to meet so many fans, I’ve had amazing matches and amazing fights. What could you possibly regret about any of that? I’m living my best life right now.”

Narrator: One thing we couldn’t get Anaquin Adams to discuss was her personal life. We tried to probe her about it, but she would deflect each and every time.

Producer: So, throughout this process, I have attempted to ask you about your personal life. Relationships. That sort of thing. You’ve avoided the question, deflected the question. Is there a reason?

ANAQUIN ADAMS
“Universal Superstar”

“Who I am outside of wrestling and fighting, that’s someone who is very private. Check my social media. I don’t talk about a heck of a lot of personal stuff there. Am I seeing anyone? I am. But I’m not willing to bring that person into the limelight with me unless they are ready for me to do so. Another reason is that relationships are fleeting. The lifestyle I live results in many breakups because I’m not willing to give up what I love for someone I have feelings for. So, what’s the point of parading them around in front of a camera when no one knows how long it would last?  I want to be remembered for my matches and my fights, not my relationships.”

Producer: Do you think that’s selfish on your part?

ANAQUIN ADAMS
“Universal Superstar”

“Of course, it’s selfish on my part. I love my life. I’m not willing to change that.”

Producer: So what’s next for Anaquin Adams.

ANAQUIN ADAMS
“Universal Superstar”

“Hopefully a fight in January. I’ve been told that I’m edging towards a championship opportunity if I keep winning. So, we shall see. Once my ribs are healed, it’s back into camp with TW Combat and preparing for that fight.  I’ve accomplished so much in professional wrestling and will never once look down on it at all. It’s just a new challenge for me. I’ve been skydiving, parachuting, rock climbing, scuba diving, room clearing, grenade throwing.. Man, there’s so much I’ve done. I’m sure there’ll be so much more. I always look for that next adrenaline rush. But fighting is in my spirit. It’s where I need to be. So, that’s where I will be.”

Narrator: She’s a daredevil, a former professional wrestling and an MMA fighter. She has closed one chapter in her life and opened another. But what happens when the thrill of the fight wears off for Anaquin Adams.

ANAQUIN ADAMS
“Universal Superstar”

“Maybe it’ll be time for someone else to be the Universal Superstar.”
